Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions on pout Care Range

What is the minimum / maximum age for using your products?
Our pout Care products have a high natural content and are gentle enough for children of all ages. There is no maximum age – in fact, adults can enjoy our natural products too!

Are the colourings in the products safe?
Yes, we use only food-based colourings from Australia.

Why are pout products made in Australia?
We chose Australia due to its high standards of manufacturing and its care for the environment. All of our products are manufactured in an ISO certified laboratory without any animal products or testing. So you can be assured that the products are safe for your child.

Is the product packaging recyclable?
Yes it is! Please dispose the finished item after use in a recycling container.

Why is it so important for products to be free from sulphates and parabens? What’s the big deal with these ingredients?
Parabens are chemicals that are commonly used to prevent bacteria and act as a preservative in deodorants, lotions, lipsticks, shampoos, scrubs, and more. Parabens are linked to several health concerns including breast cancer and reproductive disorders. While the most common parabens also have “paraben” in their name — butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben — they can also be listed as alkyl parahydroxy benzoates.

Sulphates are cleansing and foaming agents that are frequently found in shampoos and body washes. Some of the most popular products contain sulphates because they help create foam. But this harsh chemical is also linked to skin irritation, hair loss and impaired hair growth. In addition to the health risks, sulphates strip hair and scalp of natural oils, and cause excessive dryness.

While both parabens and sulphates are generally harmless in low concentrations, we understand that parents would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to their children. pout Hair Care substitutes sulphates and parabens with natural plant derivatives that are gentle yet effective. These are safe for your child’s hair and scalp.

Are pout products safe for daily use?
Yes, pout products are perfectly safe and recommended for everyday use. We understand that children have sensitive skin and scalp, so we ensure that pout’s gentle formulations are suitable for children to use daily. We use natural ingredients without any harmful sulphates and parabens to clean and hydrate. We also add a variety of organic plant and flower extracts sourced in Australia, such as Alfafa, Sage and Rosemary, to help enrich and strengthen children’s hair. You’ll find that when used over time, your child’s hair will be softer and more manageable, and will appear shiny and glossy.

Questions on pout Natural Shampoos

How do I test the suitability of the shampoo for my child’s hair?
pout Natural Shampoos are gentle and suit all hair types. However, you may want to do a patch test by applying it on a small portion of hair and scalp. If the product causes discomfort on the scalp or excessive dryness to hair, do not continue to use the shampoo.

How often should I shampoo my child’s hair?
How often you choose to shampoo depends on your child’s hair – it’s length, whether it is fine or thick, dry or oily. For children with normal hair, you may consider shampooing every alternate day. If your child perspires a lot or is often exposed to a humid environment, it is advisable to shampoo their hair daily.

How much shampoo should I use?
You may dispense an amount about 1 inch in diameter. If the child’s hair is longer, feel free to use more. Ensure that hair is thoroughly wet so that the shampoo lathers easier. After testing the initial wash with this amount of shampoo, you may adjust the volume accordingly as needed. Hair and scalp should feel clean and light after a good wash.

Why does my child’s hair feel so soft after using pout Natural Shampoo without conditioning? This is so even after swimming.
pout Natural Shampoos do not contain sulphates, which can dry hair out. In addition, we add organic Sage, Comfrey and Parsley that help nourish and condition, making hair softer and easier to manage.   Over time, your child’s hair will look glossier and healthier with regular use.

Why doesn’t my pout Natural Shampoos lather so well?
pout Natural Shampoos do not contain sulphates – the ingredient that creates rich foam. To create lather, make sure hair is thoroughly wet before applying the shampoo. Use a sufficient amount, and continue to add water to create lather. Make sure shampoo reaches all parts of the scalp for an effective and even cleanse. Shampooing twice occasionally will also help. Shampooing the first time removes product build up that results in dull, dry hair. After rinsing off thoroughly, repeat the process. You will notice that there will be more lather the second time due to less residue on your child’s hair.

I noticed little ulcers on my child’s scalp when using pout’s Shampoo. Why did this happen?
If you are switching from a sulphate shampoo to a sulphate-free one, the scalp will need time to adjust to the change. Little ulcers may appear which may cause some itchiness. In other cases, insufficient amount of shampoo used to cleanse, or uneven cleansing, would result in little ulcers as well. Always ensure you use enough shampoo and thoroughly lather through every section of the scalp.

Questions on pout Hydrating Conditioner

How often should my child’s hair be conditioned?
How often you condition your child’s hair depends on hair type, length and hydration needs. If your child’s hair is thick, curly, or longer it would be advisable to condition it more often, say four times a week. Fine hair does not require conditioning as often and can be conditioned twice or three times a week.

How long should I leave on the conditioner on my child’s hair?
Just a few minutes should be long enough for the conditioner to penetrate the hair shaft. You may leave it on a few minutes longer if your child’s hair is thicker or dryer. Please remember to apply conditioner only on the hair ends, and not near the scalp and roots.

What is the difference between a Conditioner and a Detangler?
A conditioner imparts moisture and protein to strengthen and hydrate the hair. Hair that is conditioned often will be able to resist breakage better, and will look shinier and healthier. A detangler helps remove tangles and smooths the hair cuticle but doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft. It works instantly, and can be used between shampooing or after play.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate is listed on the ingredients list of your conditioner. Isn’t that a sulphate and is it harmful?
Behentrimonium Methosulfate is made from non-genetically modified rapeseed oil and is not a sulphate. This ingredient is renowned for its superior detangling ability, without causing build-up on the hair. Unlike other conditioning ingredients, which are known for their irritancy, Behentrimonium Methosulfate is extremely mild, and is even recommended for use in baby products which are left on the skin. Because this ingredient directly deposits onto the hair follicle to smooth out the cuticles, it’s highly regarded for its conditioning abilities.

Is it true that children don’t need conditioner since their hair is so soft anyway?
Conditioners work like moisturisers do on the face. They create a seal of natural emollients that hydrate and nourish hair throughout the day, making it healthier, shinier, and more resilient to damage. When your child’s hair has a healthy moisture level it is more manageable and pliable, and holds a style better.

Questions on pout Natural Detangler

Does the Detangler only serve to detangle & nothing else?
pout Peaches & Cream Natural Detangler not only helps to release the tangles in your child’s hair, it also helps to keep hair fresh and neat between washes, or after swim or play. This treatment detangler contains Argan oil high in antioxidants, which promotes healthy hair growth and helps treat split ends. It is also formulated with organic Alfafa, Calendula and Marshmallow root extracts that nourish the scalp and give luster to hair. Your child’s hair will look softer, silkier and more manageable and will have a healthy, attractive shine.

Is pout Peaches & Cream Natural Detangler a leave-in product?
Yes it is. This product can be used on wet or dry hair, and in between washes or after play. The benefit of having a leave-in product is that there is no need to rinse it off and you will be able to see the results instantly.

I am already using pout’s Green Apple Whoosh Hydrating Conditioner. Is it necessary to use the Natural Detangler?
The Natural Detangler keeps hair fresh and neat and is especially useful as a treatment in between washes, or when your child’s hair is tangled after play or upon waking up. It can be used on dry hair, and is convenient as it is a leave-in product. Swimmers will love how this product instantaneously detangles post-swim hair.

Questions on pout Swimmers’ Top-to-Toe

Is this product only suitable for young swimmers?
Our Swimmers’ Top-to-Toe has a high natural content and does not contain any sulphates or parabens. While it is gentle enough for young children, it works equally well on older children and adults. There is no maximum age to use this product.

Does the product just suppress the chlorine smell?
This product does not just suppress the chlorine smell, it is formulated especially to remove chlorine and salt water from hair and skin after swimming. It also cleanses and moisturises naturally, repairing and protecting hair and skin from chlorine and salt water damage.

What effects does chlorine have on hair and skin?
Chlorine is a strong chemical added to swimming pools to kill bacteria. Studies have shown that exposure to chlorinated water can lead to premature aging of skin. It also depletes the hair and skin of natural oils that hold moisture in. This explains why your hair and skin feels dry after swimming due to the chlorine damage. As children’s hair and skin are more delicate and sensitive, prolonged exposure to chlorine can be more damaging.

Can the product be used every day?
Unless your child swims every day, we recommend that you use pout Care’s regular Natural Shampoos for daily use. This product is specifically meant for use after exposure to chlorine & salt water. If your child does not swim often, you may also consider using our Top-to-Toe once every 1 – 2 weeks to deep cleanse the hair and reduce buildup.

Will this product dry the hair (and skin)?
This product is formulated to remove the stubborn chlorine that binds to hair (and skin) after swimming, and therefore is stronger than the regular pout Care Natural Shampoos. It is however, enriched with Panthenol (Vitamin B5) to help hydrate and regenerate hair and skin. Always return moisture to the hair by following up with our Green Apple Whoosh Hydrating Conditioner.

How much of the product should I use each time?
Use a generous amount with water so that it lathers up well on hair and skin. Rinse off after use.

Do I need this product if my child is already using the Orange Float Sun & Swim Protection? Isn’t that supposed to protect hair from chlorine?
While the Sun & Swim Protection spray creates a protective layer, it will not be a 100% cover, especially since there is a high chance that the product may not be applied evenly to the whole head of hair. Furthermore, the Sun & Swim Protection spray only provides protection for hair and not skin. The Swimmers’ Top-to-Toe is for both hair and skin, and is used after swim to specifically remove the chlorine and salt water that would have gotten on your child’s hair and skin. We recommend using both products for optimal protection.

Questions on pout Sun & Swim Protection

Can the Sun & Swim Protection spray be used on the skin?
This product is meant for use on the hair only. For protection for the skin, you should look for sun screen products with SPF protection against UV rays.

Should this be used on wet or dry hair?
You may use this on both wet and dry hair before entering chlorine water or going out into the sun. Finger comb through the hair so that the product is applied as evenly as possible throughout the whole head of hair.

When should this product be used?
Our Sun & Swim Protection is meant to provide protection against chlorine, salt water and UV rays. This means that you may use it not only before swimming, but also before any outdoor activities or even before going out into the sun.

If the product is used before swimming, will it come off in the water?
The Sun & Swim Protection spray forms a protective layer around the hair shaft, and will not come off so easily in water.  Similar to a sunscreen, it should be applied generously to the hair before entering the water and will only need to be re-applied if the child spends a long time in the water.  To remove the product from hair, please shampoo and rinse off.

Does the Spray provide UV protection for the hair? Why isn’t there an SPF protection indicator on the bottle?
Yes, it forms a protective barrier to lock moisture in the hair shaft, and minimises harmful exposure to UV rays and the harsh environment. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of how a product is able to protect against UV exposure to the skin, it does not measure UV exposure to the hair. Since this product is only used for the hair, we do not use the SPF measure.

If we use this Protect Spray to protect hair from chlorine, would it mean that we do not have to use the Swimmers’ Top-to-Toe?
While the Sun & Swim Protection spray creates a protective layer, it will not be a 100% cover, especially since there is a high chance that the product may not be applied evenly to the whole head of hair. Furthermore, the Sun & Swim Protection spray only provides protection for hair and not skin. The Swimmers’ Top-to-Toe is for both hair and skin, and is used after swim to specifically remove the chlorine and salt water that would have gotten on your child’s hair and skin. We recommend using both products for optimal protection.
